Choosing the best car subscription for you

When choosing the best car subscription service, the first thing to consider is your driving needs. Are you a city slicker, or do you love hitting the open road? Do you have a daily commute that takes you far and wide, or are you more of a weekend warrior? Knowing what you need from a vehicle will help you choose the right car and monthly mileage allowance. Jot down a list of must-haves, like range (if looking for an EV) or fuel efficiency (if you are not ready to switch to electric vehicles.).

Do your homework, and get the scoop!

Research is key when it comes to finding the right car subscription service. Take a good look at the monthly fee, the variety of cars offered, and any restrictions or additional fees. Read up on what previous subscribers have to say, and don’t be afraid to reach out to the customer service teams of the services you're interested in and ask them questions.

Compare and conquer!

Don’t just look at the monthly fee when comparing car subscription services. Also, consider any upfront deposits, delivery and collection fees, and mileage restrictions. Then, compare this to the cost of purchasing or leasing a vehicle to see which option gives you the most value for your hard-earned cash.

Remember, with a car subscription service, you have the flexibility to switch to a different car model or cancel your subscription at any time, with no long-term commitment required. So choose wisely, and drive happy!

The extra benefits

Another critical point to consider is the access to additional services offered by the car subscription provider. Some services offer added benefits such as an inclusive free electric vehicle (EV) charging or access to hundreds of charging points through exclusive partnerships. For example, ShellRecharge provides access to charging points and fuel purchase discounts. This can be especially valuable for EV owners who want the convenience of hassle-free charging while on the go.

Finally, if you're new to subscriptions, it's a good idea to learn more about the process, how it works, cancellations etc. We have expertly written guides on all of these topics.

To get started, browse through our advice library here!

What are the main types of vehicle subscription services in the UK?

Car subscription come in a variety of shapes and sizes, offering options for everyone from luxury car aficionados to eco-conscious EV enthusiasts. Here are the main types currently available:

  1. Manufacturer-based services: Car manufacturers such as Volvo offer subscription services that allow customers to drive their cars without the commitment of owning or leasing.
  2. Multi-brand providers: These services offer a variety of car brands and models, allowing customers to switch between vehicles as their needs change.
  3. Luxury car services: These services specialise in high-end vehicles and offer access to premium cars that may not be available for purchase or lease (still need to pick up in the UK).
  4. Dealership subscriptions: These are becoming the norm as more and more dealers choose to use subscription software, which allows them to set up their own subscription service easily.
  5. Electric vehicle subscriptions: These services focus on EVs and provide access to a fleet of electric cars and the necessary charging infrastructure through partnerships.
  6. Flexible rental services: These services offer short-term rental options for customers who need a car for a specific period.

How will you get your car

Ah, the big question! How do you actually get your hands on that shiny new motor when you sign up for a vehicle subscription service? Well, it depends on your chosen service. Some might deliver the car right to your doorstep, while others may have a pickup location where you can collect the car yourself.  If you decide to swap your vehicle for another one, they will likely collect it from your home and deliver the new one too.

But don't worry, they'll make sure you're fully clued up on the process. Most services will provide you with all the necessary details, including any forms you need to fill out and what ID you'll need to show.

Is normal wear and tear included in the price?

So, here's the deal with normal wear and tear. Usually, it's all part of the package when you sign up for a vehicle subscription service. Think small scuffs, a few dings, and tire wear from your daily adventures.

However, it's always best to double-check the specifics of your chosen service. Some may have different ideas about what constitutes normal wear and tear, so it's worth having a quick read of the terms and conditions. Just to make sure you're not left with any nasty surprises down the line.

What isn't included in the monthly subscription?

It's always best to be aware of all the possible fees and charges that may not be included in the cost, so you can budget and plan accordingly.

Excess mileage, additional drivers, excess wear and tear, and tickets/fines are extra costs that may apply on top of a car subscription. The mileage limit is usually 800 miles/month, but if you exceed it, you can incur fees between 4p to 25p per mile.

Adding another driver to your subscription may incur a fee, varying by service and driver. In addition, damage or excessive wear and tear may result in additional fees at the end of your subscription.

Be sure to understand the specific policies of your car subscription service to avoid extra costs.

How long will it take for my car to be delivered?

The delivery time of your car after signing up can vary depending on the provider and your location. On average, it could take anywhere from a few days to 3 months for the car to be delivered to you. The longer delivery times we see are usually for company like Care By Volvo where you can customise a vehicle, so that takes time. Other providers are much quicker, as long as the car is in stock.

Drive Fuze

Approved partner
Editor's take

Why choose Drive Fuze?

Drive Fuze is a great option for drivers looking for a cheaper car subscription without all the bells and whistles. They don’t offer too many customisation options, but this keeps things simple: you can sign up and walk away after a month if you decide it’s not for you.

With 1,000 miles included, Drive Fuze offers one of the more generous standard car subscription mileage packages. So it works if you want a little more leeway with your monthly mileage, without paying extra for additional miles (although this is also available if needed).

Drive Fuze guarantees to deliver your car within 7 days of ordering. So if you need a car subscription with a quick turnaround, this is a good option. You won’t need to wait around for car customisation or availability.

Booking a car

How does Drive Fuze work?

You can take out a car subscription on the Drive Fuze website. Here’s how it works:

  2. Tell them about any named drivers and additional mileage if needed.
  3. Share your ID documents (usually your driving licence, a credit or debit card, and proof of address). Drive Fuze will verify these.
  4. If you pass a credit check, your car subscription will be approved.
  5. Drive Fuze will take the refundable upfront payment and delivery fee, and let you know when your car is on its way.

Drive Fuze subscriptions work on a rolling contract basis. Every month you can decide whether to renew your car subscription for the following month. You’ll need to give 14 days’ notice to cancel your car subscription with Drive Fuze.

Care by Volvo

Approved partner
Editor's take

Why choose Care by Volvo?

When it comes to convenience, the all-inclusive monthly fee is hard to beat. It's the simplest way to own a car but that always comes at a price. Combine that and the fact that Volvo is not a budget brand at all, you may need to fork out a fair bit more than usual.

On the other hand, considering all expenses related to owning a car are included in the monthly payment, subscribing to a car may be cheaper than buying! However, the fact you can customise the car you want and the flexible terms, means that Care by Volvo can be a great option for many who can afford to enjoy the benefits.

Booking a car

How does Care by Volvo work?

To get a car on subscription through Care by Volvo you'll need to:

  1. Choose the model and trim you like.
  2. Fill in your details to confirm your account and credit eligibility. (See FAQ for more)
  3. Pick up the car from a local retailer or have it delivered to your home.

The benefit of going with Volvo is that you can really customise the car. But keep in mind, personalised cars can take more than 3 months to arrive, while a pre-built models can be delivered from 4 weeks.

The minimum commitment is 3 months, so you won't be able to switch your car more frequently. Care by Volvo also offers a fixed 36-month subscription with a lower monthly rate.

Wagonex

Approved partner
Editor's take

Why choose Wagonex?

Wagonex's offering is quite unique. They don't own their inventory and rely on dealership partners to supply their cars. But the best way to find out if Wagonex is right for you is to go through the sign up process and speak their dealerships directly. Just be mindful that their credit check will be hard search meaning it will affect your credit score.

Pivotal

Approved partner
Editor's take

Why choose Pivotal?

Generally speaking, Jaguars and Land Rovers aren’t some of the most owned cars on UK roads. Early research conducted by Pivotal showed that 80% of the UK motorists haven’t driven a car from these two brands. So, getting one on subscription may be a good way to experience them.

The big benefit with Pivotal is that you can pause your subscription membership of your personal circumstances change. Then you pick it up again when you need a car. And once you are on their system, you won’t have to pay that hefty joining fee! It’s definitely not one of the cheapest options out there.

Booking a car

How does Pivotal work?

Unlike with other subscription services where the process is handled quickly by yourself online, with Pivotal you’ll have to submit your personal details and wait for their sales team to reach out to you.

You’ll have to provide your basic details and tier of choice. Then they will carry out checks to see if you are eligible for their car insurance, verify your identity, check your affordability (via Open Banking) and look at your past driving history (via DVLA).

You will have a mileage limit of 1,500 miles per month. More information about the fees follow below.

Evogo

Approved partner
Editor's take

Why choose Evogo?

If you’re looking a subscription service which offers a wide variety or makes and models for any budget, then Evogo is for you. It’s generally cheaper than other subscription services and usually have a round 40 cars available at any given time.

There are no extra charges, or exit fees, makes planning your budget quite easy. Plus, you have the freedom the get your own insurance so you can shop around to find a good deal. That’s not possible with other services as they would include their own which could be a bit more expensive.

Booking a car

How does Evogo work?

You start off by picking a car of your choice. If there’s a specific model you really want but isn’t available yet, you can back-order it and drive a lead-in car while you wait.

Another perk of going with Evogo which isn’t available with other subscription companies, is that you can part-exchange your old car towards the cost of your subscription. Nice one.

The next step, the most important of all, is filling out their application form. You’ll need to provide your basic personal details a long with details about your job and desired vehicle and mileage. The Evogo team will assess your eligibility and get back to you within 48 hours.

Where other subscription service include insurance in the monthly payment, Evogo would require you to find and pay for your premium on your own. So, you’ll need to get this sorted before collecting your car.

Another interesting tid-bit with Evogo is that you have to pick up your first car in person from their office in Sheffield. The good news is that, when you decide to get a new car, they’ll be able to deliver it to you.

Your car subscription agreement with Evogo lasts 89 days and you’ll need to renew it if you want to carry on using the car. This is all done online so it shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes.

In terms of mileage, you can choose between 10k to 30k miles per annum and Evogo will ask you submit your mileage regularly.

Flexed

Approved partner
Editor's take

Why choose Flexed?

Flexed is a little more old-fashioned than some of the other car subscription providers out there. Their phone booking system may put drivers off if they’re looking for instant booking with maximum convenience.

But there are other reasons to choose Flexed as your car subscription provider. Their eligibility age is lower than some other providers, which only take on drivers aged 25 and over. Plus, most other providers include insurance within their packages, which gives you less flexibility over your insurance. If you want to arrange your own car insurance, Flexed could be the right provider for you.

Booking a car

How does Flexed work?

All available cars are listed on the Flexed website. You can see certain key information — including fuel type, emissions, fuel economy and car value — at a glance. When you’ve chosen your car, you can request a bespoke quote based on your usage needs.

A Flexed team member will then get back to you with a quote. Unlike other car subscription providers, you can’t sign up online. You’ll need to complete the booking over the phone or in person at Flexed’s York depot. While this is a little less convenient than online booking, it means you may be able to negotiate terms if you’re comfortable doing so.

If you want to change or cancel your car subscription, you can do so at any time. Flexed will refund any days you’ve paid for and not used (after your initial 28 day contract period).

Mocean

Editor's take

Why choose Mocean?

If you want to drive a Hyundai but don’t want the hassle and expense of car ownership, Mocean could be the best provider for you.

Unlike some other providers, Mocean doesn’t require any upfront payments. You can choose a contract length from 3 to 24 months, helping you balance flexibility with your budget. Longer contracts typically cost less per month than shorter contracts, but you’re tied in for longer.

Mocean may also offer car subscriptions if you have a low credit score. So if your heart is set on a Hyundai (and you meet their eligibility criteria), Mocean offers super flexible car subscriptions for a range of budgets.

How does Mocean work?

It’s simple to sign up with Mocean:

  1. Browse their available cars online and choose the car you want, along with the contract length, mileage, and insurance type.
  2. Upload the required documents to their online portal.
  3. If you pass the credit and ID check, your application will be approved.
  4. Collect your car from your local approved Hyundai retailer (currently only in London) within 21 working days.

You can also have the car delivered to your home for a small fee.

When your contract ends, you’ll return the car. Alternatively, you may be able to extend your subscription, switch to another car, or even buy the car from Mocean.

SIXT+

Editor's take

Why choose Sixt+?

Sixt+ may be a good choice for people looking to take out a car subscription with an established company. It’s more expensive and less flexible than many other services, but if you want the reassurance of a familiar name, it may be the right choice for you.

This subscription service is best if you only need a car for the short-term (i.e. 3 months or less). This can work if you want to test drive a car before you make a purchase (although be mindful that you may not be assigned the exact car you choose online).

Sixt+ doesn’t include too many benefits as standard, so you’ll pay a premium to include fairly basic perks like roadside assistance. However, there are lots of add-ons to choose from, so it’s good for those who want a no-frills or heavily customised car subscription.

How does Sixt+ work?

You can subscribe to a Sixt+ car online. Here’s how it works:

  1. Browse the Sixt+ website to find a car you like. Note that this isn’t necessarily the exact car you’ll get; Sixt+ groups similar cars together by their ACRISS code (each letter defines a vehicle characteristic). The vehicle you’re assigned is decided at the Sixt station on the day of collection.
  2. Choose your nearest branch and the date you’d like to pick up your car.
  3. Select your mileage plan (500 miles are included for free, but you can upgrade this for a fee).
  4. Choose any optional extras, such as child seats, additional drivers, or courtesy car guarantee.
  5. Subject to car availability and passing a credit check, your subscription request will be approved.
  6. Pick up your car from the selected Sixt station on the agreed date.

Sixt+ car subscriptions have a maximum duration of 90 days, or three subscription periods of 30 days each. So you can renew your subscription twice before you must return the car. This works for short term subscribers, but it’s not the best for those who want the option of driving their car for longer periods.

Genesis Flexibility

Editor's take

Why choose Genesis Flexibility?

Genesis Flexibility allows you to drive a premium car without paying for one upfront. So it’s ideal if you’re looking to upgrade your driving experience for a relatively low cost.

That said, Genesis Flexibility is more expensive than many other car subscription providers. You’re also tied in for at least 6 months, so make sure you can afford these monthly payments. Genesis Flexibility may work well if you want a medium-term subscription, rather than the flexibility to cancel or switch cars every month or so.

You’ll need to speak to the Genesis support team to take out a car subscription. This is ideal for drivers who want a hands-on, personalised experience, rather than a no-frills online-only service.

Booking a car

How does Genesis Flexibility work?

As with other branded vehicle subscription providers, you’re limited to Genesis cars. However, there aren’t many Genesis cars currently available with other providers, so if you want to drive one of these luxury vehicles on subscription, this is probably the best way to do it.

Browse the available cars and their specifications on the Genesis Flexibility website. When you’re ready to subscribe, you’ll need to contact their team using the online enquiry form. You can’t subscribe directly through the website.

Your Personal Assistant will guide you through the subscription process. You’ll need to pass a credit check and pay the first month’s rental upfront.

When your car subscription has been approved, the car will be delivered to your home within two weeks. Your Personal Assistant will show you around the car. When it’s time to return it, they’ll collect the car from you.

Each Genesis Flexibility contract lasts for 18 months, but the minimum term is just 6 months. Once you’ve had the car for 6 months, you can return it without paying a penalty. Cancel your car subscription with 30 days’ notice any time after this 6 month period.
