Important announcement

In early June 2022, Cazoo announced that they will be cutting jobs and reducing investment. As a result, they will also stop car subscriptions to new customers from the end of June 2022. They will continue to support existing car subscribers until their contracts run out.

Cazoo promise they will come back to the subscription market later, as they still see it as an important addition to other types of car ownership. It's not really surprise, considering Cazoo have approximately 10,000 subscription customers across the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

“We are starting to see an impact on consumer confidence and a marginal shift in the type of cars people are looking for as cost of living starts to bite,” founder and CEO Alex Chesterman said.

About Cazoo

Cazoo acquired Drover in 2021, which was one of UK's first all-inclusive, multi-brand car subscription services offering consumers the freedom to experience car ownership without the hassle and on their own terms.

Their mission is to help drivers get the car they want in return for one all-inclusive monthly fee which covers maintenance and breakdown cover.

How does Cazoo work?

Similarly to other subscription services, Cazoo makes finding the right car and getting a subscription super easy. Here's how to sign up to Cazoo's subscription service:

  1. Create an account and add your personal information.
  2. Browse through the wide range of makes and models.
  3. Request the desired car and a team member will be in touch.
  4. Provide additional information about preferred mileage and driving history.
  5. Pass the verification process which includes a soft search on your report.
  6. When your subscription is confirmed, they take a refundable deposit equal to two monthly payments.
  7. Pay your first monthly subscription payment which will include a one-time sign up fee.
  8. Your new car will be delivered within a week.

Driver eligibility and requirements

To be able to take out a car subscription, you must:

  • Be at least 25 years of age - if you're aged 25 you can buy a car from them instead.
  • Hold a full UK driving licence - provisional licence or paper licence are not accepted.
  • Have held your UK licence for at least 12 months - if you've exchanged a foreign licence, you'll need to provide evidence.

Cazoo won't approve your subscription application if you:

  • You have more than 6 points on your driving licence.
  • You have more than one CU (Construction and Use Offences) conviction.
  • You have any major driving convictions in the last 3 years - see the full DVLA code list.
  • You have been disqualified from driving in the last 5 years.

We also have an in-depth guide which explains the driver requirements and eligibility in a lot more detail.

How much does Cazoo cost?

Cazoo's all-inclusive fee includes the following:

  • 1,000 miles monthly mileage allowance
  • Comprehensive insurance from NIG
  • 24/7 roadside assistance
  • Maintenance and servicing
  • Road tax

For instance, on a 24 month contract, a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus could cost from around £949 a month, while an Audi A5 will cost around £579 a month. Keep in mind prices go up if you want a shorter minimum period of time to have the car. So, a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus is £1,429 on a minimum six-month contract and an Audi A5 is £759.

For those who love driving and expect to do more than 1,000 miles per month, there's a solution for you. Cazoo offers two ways to add more mileage to your subscription for a flat fee on top what you're already paying:

  • Add 1,500 to your monthly subscription for an additional £100 per month
  • Add 2,000 to your monthly subscription for an additional £200 per month

Once your account has been confirmed you’ll be charged for your first payment. There are no joining or admin fees to worry about at the beginning of your subscription.

What's NOT included in Cazoo's monthly payment?

  • If you want to drive abroad you'll need to pay more on the insurance which costs £36 for two weeks or £54 for a month. You may have to pay for breakdown cover separately too but that would depend on the country and how long you're going away for. There's also a £20 fee for a certificate which proves you have permission to take the car overseas.
  • You'll be responsible for any parking fines (Penalty Charge Notice), plus a £20 admin fee on top of the PCN itself.
  • You'll be charged either £0.35-£0.40 (depending on when your subscription has started) for any unplanned mileage above the pre-agreed limit.
  • Also, if you change your mind and want to return the car within 7 days, you can, but you'll be charged £1 for every additional mile driven over 250 miles.
